Board Certified, American Board of Ophthalmology
Dr. Jennifer Lyons joined Oregon Eye Specialists in 1996. She was born and raised in rural Indiana, spending summers detassling corn. She was valedictorian in her high school, then went on to earn a BA in zoology at Indiana University with High Honors. She chose zoology with the original intent to become a veterinarian, but decided on human medicine after working in the local hospital as a phlebotomist during her junior and senior years in college. Dr. Lyons went on to graduate from Indiana University School of Medicine. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society in college, and Alpha Omega Honor Society in medical school. She served her Internship at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, OR and completed her Residency in Ophthalmology at OHSU’s Casey Eye Institute.
“One of the greatest moments of my life was hearing the news that I was accepted to the prestigious residency at Casey Eye Institute. I love the outdoors, and always wanted to live in the Pacific Northwest. I take advantage of our beautiful state every day, running the trails with my dog near my house and commuting by bicycle.”
Dr. Lyons has been appointed Clinical Instructor at Casey Eye Institute, and is a consulting and attending physician at the Portland Veterans Administration Medical Center, where she teaches ophthalmic surgery. She is board certified and practices comprehensive ophthalmology, taking care of patients of all ages. She has a special interest in cataract surgery, and also does glaucoma care and laser, diabetic retinopathy screening and treatment/laser, and eyelid surgery. She has served on the Executive Committee of the Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology since 1998, where she was the delegate to the Oregon Medical Association (OMA) for six years. She has also served on the Board of Trustees in Multnomah County Medical Society, and is currently a trustee to the OMA. Dr. Lyons has also joined Northwest Medical Teams on mission trips to Oaxaca, Mexico and El Salvodor.
Outside of practice, Jennifer is an avid cyclist, and commutes in all weather four days per week. She has participated in the weeklong Cycle Oregon six years, and is a member of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance. She also enjoys yoga, hiking with her Siberian Husky, Simba, and running, and has run in the Hood to Coast relay several times. She and her husband, Matt, also enjoy snowboarding, scuba diving, and cross-country skiing.
